There was once a day when birds were just things that flew and I didn't give them a second thought. That changed when in central Australia 2010 with binoculars and a telephoto lens on my camera. Through both of these I could see colour and detail I had never experienced before. They are so varied, some being iridescent jewels. These days our trips into the countryside are made much richer by planning visits to the various habitats of these amazing creatures. My bird photography tends to be of the opportunistic style, as we are constantly moving about. Birds will often have to compete with landscape photography as the twitching hour and the best light coincide.
These photographs are not necessarily the most descriptive or technically accomplished in my folder; they were chosen because I liked the mood in the image, or they are descriptive of a particular location.

I wish I could have been out in the great outdoors more often but those trips have to fit around my city based work. None the less here are a few more images, all taken in metro Melbourne around the banks of the Yarra River or Darebin Creek, 7km from Melbourne's CBD.. They include some surprising species only seen occasionally.
